Would you like to be a filmmaker?

Hervey Bay Film Festival offers filmmaking workshops to the Fraser Coast and surrounding communities.

Our workshops offer everybody the opportunity to learn filmmaking concepts, creative skills and gain practical experience through our hands-on modular workshops.

Workshops can be tailored to individuals, a group of friends, students and community groups. Students are shown the basics of directing, camera, and lighting. Students are invited to write, direct and shoot a scene or short film project.

Our workshops help students tell the story they want to convey. We have Netflix-ready modern filmmaking equipment to make your filmmaking training look high-quality.

Workshops can be one-offs, although we recommend a minimum of four in order to learn the basics and end up with meaningful footage.

An example set of 4 x Workshops:

WORKSHOP #1
We setup a scene with cameras, lights and sound equipment. We explain what the equipment is called and what it is used for. We setup two attendees performing as actors – I will be a simple scene and no experience is necessary. We go through the blocking out of the scene (where actors sit, stand, move to…) and explore different ways of filming the scene. Attendees are shown different cameras, lenses and lighting techniques.

At the end of WORKSHOP #1 we hand out a form with a simple Q&A for you to answer so you retain what you have learnt. We hand out a SCENE form – where you write out a minute’s dialogue for two actors in a scene that we will film in WORKSHOP #2.

WORKSHOP #2
We split the workshop into equal rehearsal sessions for each scene writer: We read your scene and dialogue and work out how we will film the scene and setup each shot. We time a rough read through, and depending on how many attendees, share the two hour session evenly. If you need props bring those. If you want actors to wear costumes bring those – if actors are happy to wear them.

At the end of WORKSHOP #2 we write up and set tasks for WORKSHOP #3.

WORKSHOP #3
You arrive on set prepared and ready to direct – with copies of your scene, notes, camera angles, lenses… We work as professional filmmakers ensuring your scene is shot within your designated time while we listen to your vision.

After WORKSHOP #3 we transfer video files over to a Mac for video editing. This is time intensive so we prep the video edit session off-site, and return for WORKSHOP #4.

WORKSHOP #4
We return with a Mac ready to edit your scene and explain workflow. If we use multiple cameras we run through options. We explain colour grading and sound production. We export a video of your scene and transfer to a USB-C drive if you have one and/or upload online for you to download later.

We can configure workshops as a standalone, a set of 2, 4, 6, 8, 10…
